Live Performance Life Drawing with SHEBAD
February 20, 2025 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. | Sliding scale tickets ($10-$35)
Get ready for a unique, intimate evening with local legends, SHEBAD, at Otherwise Studios for another live performance life drawing event!
This event will give you a behind-the-scenes peak at what a SHEBAD rehearsal looks and sounds like, while learning how to draw a moving figure.
The rehearsal format and drawing class are carefully curated together to create an enjoyable art & music experience that match each other’s energy. There will be guided demos every step of the way, teaching techniques to draw and problem-solve quickly, lean into intuition, and capture moving shape, form, and light.
Join us for this rare, stripped back rehearsal setting and artistic event. Come to draw, or just enjoy the sweet sounds of the band. This event has a sliding scale ticket system, please pay what you can and support local artists!
All materials will be supplied, no experience necessary. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials if they wish. There will be both seated and standing options. Whether you plan to draw or just come and listen, we welcome you into this evening of good vibes and great music.
About the band
SHEBAD is the creative spirit of visual artist and vocalist Claire Voy and multi-instrumentalist Ciccio Spagnolo. This Guelph-based music project plays on the exploratory realm of Indie Soul, characterized by jazz-influenced melodies, danceable basslines, and Claire's transcendent voice. Their sound is a synthesis of influences like Stevie Wonder, Hiatus Kaiyote, Amy Winehouse, Daft Punk, and Erykah Badu, making the music compelling and curious with lyrics from the heart. CBC’s Laila Biali aptly describes their sound as “Music that exists in a sonic world of its own”.
Claire Voy is a multidisciplinary artist exploring themes of queerness, spirituality, and human connection. Through drawing, painting, and printmaking, Claire embodies her commitment to exploring the complexities of identity and existence. Ciccio Spagnolo is a multi-instrumentalist and passionate music educator who teaches in a forest setting at The Guelph Outdoor School. They share the experience of being the only musicians in their families, learning from local legends, listening and loving music. When Claire and Ciccio come together, the result is vibrant music that explores inner and outer worlds, humanity, and love; creating a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Performing live as a 5-piece arrangement, the band released their debut album Music is the Answer on Nov. 1st, 2024 to extremely positive feedback, including a 9/10 album rating from music critic Giggens, consistent radio play across Canada on CBC Music, and more.
The band kicked off 2024 with direct support slots for Kamasi Washington, Thievery Corporation, and Anomalie, followed by performances at Hillside Festival, Mariposa Folkfest, Sunfest, Peterborough Folk, and headline slots at both the Guelph and Toronto Jazz Festivals. In 2025, they gear up to make their US live-show debut, with more music to come.
