Family Day Workshop: Paper Clay with guest instructor Sophia Vermilyea
February 17, 2025 | 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. | Sliding scale pricing ($35 - $55)
Recommended for kids age 7+, but full families welcome. Please purchase one ticket per person who will be making a paper clay sculpture (accompanying adults only attending to help the children with the activity, or to watch, do not need to purchase a ticket).
Families are welcome to join this workshop that will engage the whole family in creative fun! Participants will learn how to make paper clay, build moulds, and sculpt their paper clay on their hand-crafted templates. Pieces will be left behind to dry and participants will be able to arrange pick up times with the studio. Dry pieces will be sent home with a small painting kit to continue the family fun at home!
Paper clay is a fun easy-to-make substance that can be used like air-dry clay to mold and sculpt a variety of shapes and forms. It uses recycled paper as a base along with other common household items to bind the material. It's an ideal choice for working with budding artists and teaching them about the environment due to its non-toxic and recycled materials, and hands-on approach that allows participants to engage in a tactile creative experience while learning something new!
To ensure willing participants have access to arts opportunities, please email Ahmri at info@otherwisestudios.com if you face financial barriers. Space permitting, we can provide complimentary admission.
About the guest instructor
Sophia Vermilyea is a third year student at the University of Guelph and an experienced arts educator. Last semester, she completed an Experiential Learning placement at Otherwise Studios where she helped prepare, plan, and facilitate workshops and events. Both in and outside of school, Sophia takes an interest in ceramics and works at her local ceramic studio teaching classes and helping with shop technician duties. This specific class came out of Sophia's dreaming during her experiential learning placement of creating more sustainable art-making opportunities for the Guelph community and her love of sculptural creations.
