Text reads Chanelle DesRoches on a black overlayed image of an abstract painting

CHANEL DESROCHES is a painter-printmaker whose work always appears to be some sort of collision, be that of conflicting thoughts or stretching the tension between happiness and sorrow.

Abstract painting with lots of colour.

DesRoches tells us that she believes “emotion comes from within; private and personal to each individual mind. My work begins with a thought, feeling, and/or memory that sparks movement of my hand across the canvas – consciously translating this feeling into line and colour. Line work and washes do battle with colour and form. The way I utilize drawn lines, patterns, colours, and forms, for me, communicates distraction, restlessness, mindlessness and outrage. I want my work to evoke, through its physical form a mode of energy akin to visually depicting a mentality or headspace. I want to paint that which we as humans: can never see, paintings that share that lost and distant quality of thoughts and feelings held in our mind.”

Shot of studio with 4 abstract paintings on the wall. In the foreground, paintbrushes and a palette sit on a table.
